Philemon's Gambit

This selection is included in NonBinary Review Issue #4, available here.

Come with me, my love. Our time has now passed
into legend. Let us plunge these old hands
into the earth, where fingers can hold fast
to the reins of gravity. Our plans
to die have been changed, it seems, by those
whose freakish cruelty hides a hard-won
wisdom. It’s true. I can’t hide it. I chose
for us to be bound together as one
under the auspices of wind and sky.
Intertwined, we uncovered hidden depths
of nature, and found those answers to why
we never asked for more, and then took steps
to shed this mortal curse. The gods’ caprice
worked in our favor. In you, I’ve found peace.
